It’s Valentine’s Day, and Buddy is in love. It’s evident in his passionate gaze, head slightly atilt as he silently suggests their daily stroll – just the two of them. Buddy would do anything to make her happy, and the feeling is mutual. And even though it’s that February time for love in the air, every day is a heart-felt holiday for the two of them.
Discovery Bay may be considered a boater’s haven, but there is another love of this community and few households are without one.
Discovery Bay residents love their pets. This little piece of paradise is home to a world of happy four-legged family members who share the lifestyle of boating, long walks, playing in the park and shopping.
Love-struck Buddy is a black Labrador mix and is listed as the co-owner of Discovery Bay Pet Sitting. His business partner Jennifer Mosser explains, “My role tends to be more of the pet sitting and appointment making aspects of the company, while Buddy excels at taste testing the treats prior to every pet sitting visit I make.”
Mosser’s unique line of work is filling a niche in Discovery Bay. Her pet sitting business offers an in-home pet care and nanny service. “Many of my clients take regular vacations or extended business trips,” she said, “and using a boarding facility can be traumatic for some animals. I provide a service that keeps their pet happy staying at home, not going somewhere they don’t know.”
Animals have a keen sense for human character, and Mosser’s passion for doing what she loves is evident by how quickly her clients’ “babies” take to her. “I always meet with the family and do an assessment,” Mosser explained. “It’s amazing how quickly their pets warm up to me. I just visited a client with three dogs, and within minutes, the littlest one was sitting on my lap.”
She emphasizes the importance of being part of an extended family for the pets, and that being familiar with her coming around also eases the stress of their owners being away.
Karen Cooper hired Mosser a year ago and recalls their first meeting. “I knew the minute she walked in the door that she was the perfect caretaker for Dusty and Shadow,” she said. “Before we moved to Discovery Bay, we used pet sitters in other areas and went through many interviews before we could find the right person. Jennifer is by far the best we have ever had.”
Mosser emphasizes her discretion in tending to the pets and home when her client is away. “I’m very careful not to broadcast to the neighborhood that someone is on vacation,” she noted. “I don’t pull up in a big advertised vehicle.” She also stressed the security value of her service. “When your dogs are at home where they are comfortable, they offer an added security protection. My clients tell me they don’t worry knowing someone is taking care of their home while they are away.”
Mosser’s two-year-old company offers an array of pet care needs not generally associated with pet-sitting. “I get a lot of people calling and asking ‘what is pet sitting?’ and my company offers much more than just a quick visit,” she said.
Accredited by Pet Sitters International and certified in Pet CPR and First Aid, Mosser’s bonded and insured business is not just a doggy day care. “I can walk your dogs, play with the cats, give medications, clean the bird cage, housesit, bring in the newspaper, empty the garbage – even do a little housekeeping. And I’m available 365 days a year.”
“She picks up and straightens the house,” said Cooper. “Sometimes she just spends quiet time with my babies. They just love her, and Jennifer adores them. She really loves animals.”
In addition to the short-term care in the absence of the owners, Mosser also provides a daily care service. “Many out here have long commuting hours and worry about their pets being home alone all day,” said Mosser. “I can take their dog for a walk, take care of their meals, or just visit, so they have company. Sometimes just having a human stop by once a day keeps their pet happy.”
Discovery Bay Pet Sitting is available for any family pet, “any size, any shape,” according to Mosser. “I’ve even cared for rats. There were 12 of them. That was a bit unusual, I admit.”
And no matter what animal kingdom creature tugs at the heart of her clients, Mosser provides a daily progress report, sending it via text or e-mail with pictures, ensuring her clients that their pet is safe and cared for. “I’ve pretty much cared for all pets, from dogs and cats to birds and rats,” she quipped. “Yes, almost everything. Except livestock. I haven’t done that. Yet.”
Customer referrals provide Mosser’s biggest returns as well as her affordable pricing. A 30-minute visit costs $20 and $5 for each additional 15 minutes.
